Opossum Creek Bushcare

Opossum Creek Bushcare

SLNC is now part of the Ipswich City Council “Bushcare” Program, looking after a patch of native bush along Opossum Creek in Brookwater.

Our first event was on March 15th 2020, where volunteers picked up rubbish under the trees and in the leaf litter of the riverine dry rain forest canopy.  This was also a trial of our systems and processes, and there were a few hiccups with people not knowing where the site was.  More signage will be in place for the next event.

On Sunday 15th March, Springfield Lakes Nature Care Inc. hosted our first ever Bushcare event at the Opossum Creek Parklands Bushcare site in Brookwater.  This was a trial of our systems and processes, and there were a few hiccups with people not knowing where the site was.  More signage will be in place for the next event – whenever that might be now that all Bushcare events have been indefinitely postponed.

7 full clean-up Australia Day bags of rubbish were collected.  Individual items included:

  • 263 plastic bottles.
  • 11 glass bottles
  • 5 aluminium cans
  • 15 steel spray cans (paint and solvent – which were very rusty and so it is thought that the people using these have moved away / grown-up now)
  • 2 deodorant steel cans
  • 43 balls of assorted sizes
  • 1 thong
  • 1 20-litre plastic drum,
  • many pieces of polystyrene making up 25 litres,
  • assorted other plastic, and
  • 2 golf sand-trap rakes.

We hope to get a small funding boost from recycling the COEX containers to pay for morning teas at future Bushcare events.  If anyone else wants to donate COEX containers to us, they can drop them off at any COEX recycling depot and use our COEX code C10002285, and we will receive the funds directly into our account.

Future events will include tree planting, watering and weeding.  Hope to see you there.
